Scholarships All Canadians Can Apply For
In the hunt for cash to pay tuition, it seems like everything is ‘earmarked’. You think you’ve found the perfect scholarship - only to realize you don’t qualify. A part of you is excited for the person who does qualify since they are going to get a lot of money. But the rest of you is annoyed at how specific the requirements are.
Luckily, there are a few scholarships that anyone can apply for. They may not be the absolutely massive ones like the big scholarships for Ontario students or scholarships for Alberta students, but a few hundred dollars here and there can really add up. With annual university costs in Canada easily hitting $20,000 per year when you factor in tuition, books, food, and living, every dollar counts.
Check out these scholarships that all Canadians can apply for - no matter your location.
11 - The survey scholarship
Value: $1,000
Criteria: This scholarship operates a bit more like a contest. You answer a survey, sharing your opinions on Canadian schools that offer engineering programs. It shouldn’t take more than about 10 minutes. People who fill out the survey are entered in the scholarship draw, and one winner gets $1,000.
It’s provided by CRI Facts, which is a research firm in Montreal and Toronto.
10 - Get a travel scholarship
Value: $1,000
Criteria: Contiki, a travel company, wants to help you protect the world through travel. While you may not be able to use this scholarship for tuition money, it’s money to help you travel anywhere in the world where you can make an impact. This could mean protecting wildlife, caring for people, or doing environmental work, to name a few. If your travel becomes heavily subsidized with this scholarship, you can use the money you would have spent travelling (or other entertainment if you couldn’t travel) towards tuition and other living expenses.
9 - Where are you going?
Value: $1,000
Criteria: This one’s easy! Just tell SLN where you’re considering going to school next year and what you’re thinking about studying. Seriously, that’s it.
8 - Win a scholarship because you looked for scholarships
Value: $500
Criteria: Billed as one of the easiest scholarships ever, this scholarship is all about rewarding initiative. Specifically, rewarding the initiative to look for scholarships. You automatically qualify simply because you took the time to research scholarships.
7 - You got in!
Value: $1,000
Criteria: If you just got into an awesome college or university for an even more awesome program, congrats! That’s a huge deal. Will you be taking business? Biology? Basket-weaving? Whatever you’ve chosen to study, your acceptance letter could win you $1,000
6 - WWF-Canada’s Campus Sustainability Grant
Value: $1,000
Criteria: This is your opportunity to do something amazing for your school. If you could work with WWF-Canada to identify a way to enhance sustainability at your school, what would you do? Grow an existing campus project, revamp the recycling or composting program, create a habitat for wildlife? Let us know your idea and WWF-Canada could make it a reality with a $1,000 grant for your school.
5 - Thrifty and thriving
Value: $1,000
Criteria: Do you love garage sales? Consignment stores? Maybe extreme couponing is your thing. Whatever your thrift savings strategy is, you probably know every trick in the book. Tell CIBC about your love for saving and you might win $1,000!
4 - Local over global
Value: $1,000
Criteria: If you have a fur baby, you could win $500. This scholarship wants to know what your pet means to you and why they are important in your life. Free money for loving your pet seems like a pretty good deal.

3 - GroundbreakHERS Scholarship
Value: $500
Criteria: Is there someone inspiring the women at your school and in your community? Maybe the person promoting that positive change is you (now’s not the time to be humble). If you or someone you know is taking action to be a GroundbreakHER and empower women, share that story and you could score this $500 scholarship from MLSE.
2 - Travel bug
Value: $1,000
Criteria: Seeking recommendations for your next (hypothetical) trip? The views in Indonesia are so gorgeous you wouldn’t even Bali-ve it. Banff is also a good time. The people are awesome and the jokes are always hill-areas. If you’re a world traveler or hoping to become one, this $1,000 scholarship* could be your ticket to wherever, whenever.
1 - That government cash
Value: Varies
Criteria: The Canadian government, luckily, wants to support education. There are tons of loans, grant programs, and bursary programs available for students. If you’re looking for money for tuition, books, or more, don’t count out the folks in Ottawa.
Bonus: Automatic entrance scholarships
Value: Varies
Criteria: Many schools have automatic entrance scholarships that you qualify for simply by having applied to, and been accepted to, that university. These can depend on your high school grades, extra-curriculars, ethnicity, community affiliations, or more. Sometimes they can even cover your whole tuition, so don’t count them out. To learn more, check the scholarships page of the university you’re planning to attend.
